Stories of El Sistema Greece – Rea

My name is Rea, I’m 14 years old, and I’m originally from Albania. I play the violin at El Sistema Greece, and at school I also play the guitar. When I was little, I really wanted to learn and play music, and my first experience was in first grade, when I started learning the guitar. My teacher, Ms. Maro Dovelou, inspired me a lot. She helped me develop my musical skills and continue with music.

In 2019, I joined the choir at El Sistema Greece. To be honest, on the first day I was very nervous because I didn’t know anyone and it was something new. But over the years, I made friends and learned what El Sistema Greece is all about. I stopped feeling shy and anxious. In 2020, I started playing the violin, and after a while I stopped the choir. I wanted to learn another instrument, and I chose the violin. I chose it because I used to listen to orchestra concerts and I loved how beautiful the violin sounded.

One of my favorite memories is when we performed at the Olympia City Music Theatre “Maria Callas”. The whole El Sistema Greece was there, and we gave a big and unforgettable concert. Another favorite memory is the “Music Beehive” Summer Camp that took place on June 21 and 22, where we did different music-related activities, such as improvisation. Another special memory was one Saturday when I played a piece in front of the whole orchestra during our rehearsal. It was stressful, but it really helps, because that way you can perform better in concerts, it’s like practicing in front of an audience. So when the concert comes, you don’t feel as nervous.

When I grow up, I want to be a musician or a singer, or both! I want to play different instruments and sing. In general, music has changed me as a person. I used to be shy, but now I’m more social and less embarrassed. Music also relaxes me and helps me forget my problems. So, music means a lot to me.
