  • Internationally renowned pianist and composer Alexandros Markeas honors El Sistema Greece with an exclusive interview

Alexandros Markeas is an internationally renowned Greek pianist and composer of contemporary orchestral music with whom El Sistema Greece has had the pleasure and honor of collaborating from the very beginning of its activities.

Having studied at the National Conservatory of Greece and at the National Conservatory of Paris, where he teaches improvisation, Alexandros Markeas has a strong interest in the languages of traditional music and favors meetings with improvised musicians from different cultures. He draws inspiration from different fields of artistic expression, such as architecture, theater and plastic arts (installations, videos) looking for alternatives of the traditional concert, in order to create specific musical listening situations. His music is characterized by a theatrical spirit and the use of technical multimedia.

For the big concert of Saturday 26 February at the Philharmonie de Paris, in the frame of the ODE project, for which 120 young musicians from 27 European countries, including six students of El Sistema Greece, were joined in a new pan-European orchestra for one unique concert, Alexandros Markeas undertook the composition of an original work entitled “Freedom, She Yells!”.

A few days before the world premiere of his new composition, during a short visit to Athens, Alexandros Markeas made a quick stop in Kypseli and gave an exclusive interview to El Sistema Greece’s Communication Manager, Fenia Biniari, where he shared his thoughts about a variety of subjects. His music, his participation in the ODE Project, his long collaboration and friendship with El Sistema Greece and the magical power of music to unite human beings.

We would like to express our gratitude to Alexandros Markeas for his continuous multilevel support to El Sistema Greece and wish for our friendship to continue and bear even more musical fruit.
